Few days ago we saw Rahul Roy, Anu Agarwal and Deepak Tijori in a special episode of the very popular reality show Indian Idol, the episode was dedicated to the 1990’s blockbuster movie Aashiqui, it was a beautiful musical love story produced and directed by Mahesh Bhatt
Bollywood Reporter/ www.bollywoodreporters.com thought to get in touch with the female star of the movie. Anu Agarwal appeared in the Doordarshan serial Isi Bahane in 1988. She made her Bollywood debut with the blockbuster Aashiqui in 1990. It also starred Rahul Roy and Deepak Tijori. The film created various records at the box office.
Anu Agarwal spoke, ” After the record breaking success of my movie Aashiqui I acted in several films such as Ghazab Tamasha (1992), Thiruda Thiruda, Khal-Naaikaa and King Uncle (1993), Janam Kundli (1995), Return of Jewel Thief (1996) and few more. I can’t forget the overwhelming response I got
after Aashiqui, once thousands surrounded my car and started banging on it at Mumbai’s Marine Drive in 1991. They started banging my car, it’s windows shouting, ‘Anu, Anu’. There was no driver, I was driving the car. I was scared, as I thought the crazy fans might break my car, pull me out.’ first time in my life I experienced fear. Thousands of people beating my car, screaming ‘Anu’, Had they got hold of me, what would have happened to me. I never saw that kind of madness.”
Bollywood Reporter/ www.bollywoodreporters.com asked, ” But why that craze and fan following discontinued ?”
Anu said, ” There were many reasons and I don’t want to recall those reasons, but one of the reasons was the colour of my skin, the actress of the main stream cinema was considered to be fair and that I wasn’t, I even refused few projects when they tried to change the colour of my skin with the help of makeover, I had self respect and the concept of fair skin came to India along with Britishers, I dislike the concept. In the past we have seen many actresses with grey skin, Smita Patil was one of them, even Sridevi wasn’t fair and later Sushmita Sen became Miss Universe she wasn’t fair either.”
