There was a time when one of the finest actors of the Indian Cinema Kamal Haasan, was called Oscar Nayagan. Kamal Haasan, the living legend for a long time was considered as the best actor of the Globe and he deserves Oscar for his incredible acting, Kamal Haasan’s fans lovingly called him Oscar Nayagan, the Oscar hero in praise of him. But even though he’d never won an Oscar. Although he is the most deserving actor to potentially receive such a prestigious and popular award of the Globe. But when AR Rahman won the twin Oscar in 2008 for his Slumdog Millionaire, then the diehard fans of
Kamal thought that now it won’t be
appropriateto call him by a title Oscar Hero, as AR Rahman from the same industry have won twin awards.
But this hasn’t stopped the Southern Indian audience from evoking the Oscar tag just for AR Rahman winning Oscar. When Rajinikanth’s Darbar was released in 2020, some of his fans streamed out of cinema halls and bewilderingly shouted, “Oscar kudra Trump-ey!” Yo Trump, give that Oscar to our superstar!
That Darbar was panned by critics and audiences is another matter. But it’s amusing that his fans felt the then US president would arrange an Oscar for their favourite star. This was hilarious and ridiculous demand went on to become an iconic meme in Tamil pop culture.
However, these arguments might be genuine, it’s essential to know and understand that they are of no concern to the Academy awards or its jury members. RRR undoubtedly represents the highest form of Telugu popular movies for audience combining grandiosity and sophistication. The film is made up of one spectacle after another, including Naatu Naatu and its choreography. It is precisely this that captured the attention of the Academy and western audiences.
and choreographed song. If anything, its Oscar win proves the potency of regional cinema in the international market, particularly at a time when Bollywood has been dealing with a bad phase, films aren’t doing well as they used to be. In 2014, films like Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash all competed in the best picture category. They were all equally classics but only one could win and Birdman won the Oscars.
So, irrespective of your personal obsession for your Idol Hero and his films with pure merit can’t win a Oscar, try to understand and use your intellect with the truth that the Oscar’s trophy holder in any category may not necessarily be your personal favourite.
Plus, why is it that we never obsess as much about our own awards here, whether it’s the National Awards given by the central government or private ones like the Filmfare Awards? Has the Indian citizens given up on the credibility of our prestigious awards ?
Are we still living under the British Rule ?
Come on let’s talk more about our Indian Awards…
National Awards, Filmfare Awards are very prestigious honours and if have doubts about their credibility then collectively try to make these awards more authentic.
