Hollywood studio czar Harvey Weinstein, who came to epitomise a culture of sexual misconduct by powerful men in the US film industry, was on February 23 sentenced to 16 years in prison for the 2013 rape of an actress in Los Angeles. The sentence will run consecutively to the 23-year prison term he is already serving for a sexual misconduct conviction in New York.
It is, therefore, very likely that the Oscar-winning ex-producer will spend the rest of his life behind bars. The proceeding unfolded in the same LA courtroom where a jury earlier found Weinstein guilty of rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by a foreign object.
