Yash Raj Films Pvt. Ltd.’s Pathaan (UA) is a spy thriller. Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan) forms a secret service agency comprising those agents who have been considered useless by the Indian government due to physical injuries etc. Supporting him is his boss, Nandini (Dimple Kapadia). Although Colonel Luthra (Ashutosh Rana) is also with Pathaan, he is not sure whether Pathaan’s plan is good.
In Pakistan, General Qadir (Manish Wadhwa) appoints erstwhile Indian secret service agent Jim (John Abraham) to reclaim Kashmir by getting India on its knees. So, Pathaan’s first mission after forming J.O.C.R. is to stop Jim in his track. Assisting Jim is ISI agent Rubai (Deepika Padukone). As time progresses, Pathaan gets to know that Jim’s sinister plan includes letting loose a virus which can threaten the very existence of human beings wherever it is let loose.
Does Pathaan succeed in thwarting Jim’s plans? If so, how?
Siddharth Anand has written a story which has so many twists and turns that it keeps the audience completely hooked. Yes, the story may not be novel but in spite of that, it doesn’t get predictable or boring. Shridhar Raghavan’s screenplay is first-rate. The pace is so phenomenal that the viewers do not get any time to think. The drama is not just interesting but also pretty engaging and engrossing. While keeping the tension alive throughout the length of the film, Raghavan has made sure to add light moments in the drama so that the audience gets a breather after short intervals, in the midst of the tension-ridden drama. Some scenes and sequences deserve special mention. Pathaan’s introduction, of course, is mind-blowing. So are Rubai’s introduction and, similarly, Jim’s introduction. The confrontation scenes between Pathaan and Jim are very exciting. The entire sequence of Salman Khan atop the train will bring the house down. In fact, there will be thunderous applause right through the sequence.
What’s more, the clapping and whistling starts even before Salman arrives on the scene. Again, there will be deafening applause in the controversial Besharam rang song, more so when Rubai appears in the even more controversial saffron-coloured swimming costume. The climax sequence in which Pathaan lays his hands on something coveted will also create a mini earthquake in the cinema halls. The last scene of the film (not being revealed) is just too outstanding. In several of these applause-worthy scenes and sequences, it will be difficult for the audience to clearly hear the dialogues, such will be the euphoria in the initial days. What’s more, Shridhar Raghavan has infused just the right amount of patriotism in the drama which will swell the viewers’ chests with pride. Abbas Tyrewala’s dialogues are fantastic, many of them clap-worthy too.
Shah Rukh Khan, coming after a long gap, strikes back like a wounded tiger. He does an absolutely splendid job. He looks like a million bucks, and uses all the charm at his command to endear himself to the audience. For all those who felt, Shah Rukh Khan was a spent force, this film comes as a tight slap on their faces. He is in full form and does the fullest justice to the character of Pathaan. In the role of Rubai, Deepika Padukone looks steaming hot and acts with effortless ease. It’s sheer delight to watch her perform as an ISI agent. Both, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone look like international stars. Both of them dance with so much grace! John Abraham is mind-blowing in the role of Jim. He is menacing, and his cool demeanour goes supremely well with his character. Ashutosh Rana lends a lot of dignity to his character. Dimple Kapadia is wonderful. Salman Khan lends tremendous star value and shines in a special
special appearance. In the sequences in which they appear together, he and Shah Rukh Khan bring the house down. Manish Wadhwa leaves a fine impression as General Qadir. Aakash Bhatija makes a mark as Amol. Prakash Belawadi has his moments as Dr. Sahani. Ekta Kaul (as Shweta) is good. Viraf Patel (as Rishi), Shaji Choudhary (as Raza), Diganta Hazarika (as Joseph), Rajat Kaul (as Raafe), Prem Jhangiani (as Dr. Farooqui), Grace Girdhar (as young Rubai), Ashutosh Singh (as Rubai’s father), Amanpreet Hundal (as Rubai’s mother), Mansi Taxak (as Jim’s wife) and the others lend terrific support.

Siddharth Anand’s direction is superb. His narration keeps the audience engrossed right from the word ‘go’. He deserves full marks for making a film on this scale and for keeping the narration so tight. Vishal-Shekhar’s music is super-hit. There will be thunderous applause in the cinemas in the Besharam rang song, more so when Deepika Padukone appears in the controversial saffron-coloured swim suit. Kumaar’s lyrics are extremely mass-appealing.
The Jhoome Pathaan song is also lovely. Vaibhavi Merchant’s choreography in the Besharam rang song, and Bosco-Caesar’s choreography in the Jhoome Pathaan song are heavenly. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara’s background music is terrific, impactful and effective. Distinction marks to the duo for a background score that adds so much to the drama! Satchit Paulose’s cinematography is outstanding. Action and stunt scenes (choreographed by Casey O’Neill, Craig Macrae and Sunil Rodrigues) are supremely thrilling and exciting. Rajat Poddar’s production designing is of a very high standard. Aarif Sheikh’s editing is super-sharp.
On the whole, Pathaan is a blockbuster, no questions asked. It will break plenty of records and create many new ones. It is destined to be one of the biggest Hindi hits.

ENTIRE INDUSTRY TO ATTEND FUNERAL

It has never happened in the past. Believe it or die, the entire Hindi film industry is headed in the same direction. After watching Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan in the morning and forenoon shows, the industry people are all going to the cremation grounds to pay their last respects to the ‘Boycott Pathaan‘ and ‘Boycott Bollywood’ gangs.
News of the demise of both the gangs came in after the first show of Pathaan got over. The gangs were already battling for life since Friday, January 19, when the plans for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer opened. Looking to the fantastic response to the film, the ‘Boycott Pathaan‘ gang took seriously ill. It was admitted to a hospital close to Yash Raj Films studio on 19th. Within hours of the same, one saw the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ gang being wheeled straight into the ICU of the same hospital. According to the doctors, both the gangs had to be put on life support system within hours of their admission.

Both the gangs fought for life valiantly. There were occasions when it appeared that the gangs would recover, especially when news of a stray incident of vandalising of a cinema house ready to screen Pathaan filtered in. But the joy of the families of the gangs was short-lived. For, within minutes of revival of the gangs, they became breathless over again. It is believed that the brisk ticket sales of Pathaan at PVR, Inox, Cinepolis, other stand-alone multiplexes and single-screen cinemas resulted in severe breathing problems for both the gangs.

Not the ones to give up easily, the two gangs fought till this morning (25th January). The attending doctors had told the families of the two gangs that Wednesday would be a very crucial day for the two patients on ventilators. The first round of thunderous applause in a multiplex, the first loud shrill of mass whistling in the cinemas, the first screams of joy… all these proved to be the proverbial last straw on the camel’s back. According to the doctors, the ‘Boycott Pathaan‘ gang breathed its last before the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ gang. But there was a difference of barely a minute or two
between the two demises, it is learnt from internal sources. One doctor said on condition of anonymity that the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ gang simply lost the will to live when its friend, the ‘Boycott Pathaan‘ gang, passed away.
The funerals of both the gangs are scheduled to take place at the IMPPA office today at 6 p.m. It is learnt that every single person of the film industry will be attending the funerals. In fact, one hears that several top distributors and exhibitors are landing in Bombay from other cities to pay their last (dis)respects to the departed souls, sorry, bodies (as they were soulless, it has been proven).
P.S.: Oven-fresh news just in: The funerals of the two gangs have been postponed to tomorrow (26th January). That’s because the founder-members of the two gangs will not be able to make it to the funerals as they are watching Pathaan in the 5 p.m. show. All efforts to pull them out of the cinemas proved futile because they were seen whistling, clapping and cheering for the characters in the film. And yes, they were also seen dancing after standing on their seats in the cinemas on the Besharam rang song, matching Deepika Padukone’s sensuous steps.

CRAZY RESPONSE TO ‘PATHAAN’ IN CINEMAS

The public seems to have gone mad with excitement. The scenes in single-screen cinemas and multiplexes during shows of Pathaan are to be seen to be believed. Not only are people clapping, applauding, screaming and shouting in scenes of the film but they are on their feet in the Jhoome Pathaan song which comes in the fag end of the spy thriller. And this is happening not in one, two or ten cinemas, but in hundreds of cinemas across the length and breadth of the country. Frankly, one has never witnessed this kind of response inside cinema halls pan-India for any film in the past.
Several factors have led to this kind of euphoria. Of course, the first and foremost reason for this behaviour of the audience from North to South and East to West is that they have loved the film and the characters of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. Secondly, the dialogues, songs and dances of Pathaan are becoming a rage. Thirdly, the public seems to be showering all its love on the film because of the sympathy wave in favour of Shah Rukh after the film was surrounded in an ugly controversy relating to the saffron-coloured swim suit of Deepika in the Besharam rang song.
Looking to the unprecedented response to the Siddharth Anand film, it would not be incorrect to say that Pathaan is not just a film, it has become a celebration of sorts, at least initially till the euphoria settles down

RRR’ SONG NAATU NAATU MAKES IT TO OSCAR NOMINATIONS

STAY ON ‘GANDHI GODSE’ RELEASE LIFTED, FILM TO HIT SCREENS

The stay on the release of Rajkumar Santoshi’s Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh was today (January 24) lifted by the Bombay high court. As a result, the film will hit the screens on January 26.
The city civil court (Borivli division), Dindoshi, Goregaon, Bombay had on January 20 put an embargo on the film’s release till Santoshi deposited Rs. 50 lakh in court which petitioner Y.T. Entertainment Ltd. (company of late financier Raju Shah) claimed was owed by Rajkumar Santoshi to it. Rajkumar Santoshi as well as Santoshi Productions LLP filed writ petitions in the high court against the city civil court order.
The Bombay high court permitted Santoshi to deposit an amount of Rs. 25 lakh with the trial court within a period of four weeks and thereby lifted the embargo on the film’s release.

PATHAAN’: WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT FROM THE SRK STARRER

Just a day to go before the controversial Pathaan comes to the cinemas for public consumption and scrutiny. With the hype the film has generated, rest assured that there will be as many reports and analysis as the number of people watching the film.
Now that it is clear that the advance booking for the film is just too phenomenal, the question uppermost in the public minds is: how much business will the spy film do?
Well, Information predicts the following:

If the film is just average, it will collect a net of at least Rs. 200 crore in India during its lifetime which will get exhausted within a couple of weeks from the date of its release (25th January).

If the film has above-average merits, it will do business which is hit. In such a scenario, the film can safely be expected to cross the Rs. 250-crore mark. The film will run for around four to five weeks in this case.

If the public doesn’t just like the film but loves it, hitting the Rs. 300-crore mark will be a cakewalk for the Yash Raj film. In this case, the film will complete a run of seven to eight weeks in cinemas.

If the film drives the audience crazy with joy, it will easily end up doing more than Rs. 300 crore, maybe even Rs. 350 crore. A run of eight to ten weeks is assured.

Of course, if, God forbid, the film is found lacking in merits, even the almost unprecedented advance booking may not be able to save the film.
As far as the first day’s figures are concerned, it is a given that the film will net more than Rs. 45 crore tomorrow. Whether it touches the Rs. 50-crore mark is to be seen. And it is also to be seen if it records the best opening ever, outdoing War, Thugs Of Hindostan and K.G.F. Chapter 2 too. Anything is possible. Read that again: ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ON THE FIRST DAY which is neither a regular day (Friday) nor a holiday (festival or national).

PATHAAN’ CRAZE: THE LOGIC BEHIND THE MADNESS

Everybody and his cousin is talking about the euphoria surrounding Pathaan. The plans opened on Friday and by the end of the fifth day, more than 5.25 lakh tickets of the film had already been sold. This is the highest number for a Hindi film. If dubbed Hindi films are also considered, it is next only to Bahubali 2: The Conclusion. Pathaan overtook the Hindi dubbed version of K.G.F. Chapter 2 as far as advance booking is concerned, only a couple of hours back. The Kannada film’s Hindi dubbed version had sold 5.15 lakh tickets in advance when it was released in April last year.
No doubt, the plans for Pathaan are filling faster in areas where there’s a sizeable Muslim population than in the other areas, especially in the case of multiplexes. But the following is what would emerge if one tries to analyse the madness in the cinema halls even before the film is out there for the public to pass its judgement:

Shah Rukh Khan’s long absence from the scene seems to have benefitted Pathaan. People appear to be very keen to watch him in action action on the big screen after so long.

The ‘Boycott Pathaan‘ gang, however minuscule it may have been (have been because, one supposes, the gang is disbanded by now as they have no face to even look at themselves in the mirror), seems to have worked cent per cent in the film’s favour. This is because a huge sympathy wave has built up in favour of Shah Rukh Khan. People feel, the star has been victimised from all sides by the powers that be as they did not bother to take action against those who vandalised cinemas and threatened cinema owners with dire consequences if they “dared to screen the film”. Hundreds and thousands of people are planning to watch Pathaan in solidarity with Khan even though they are self-admittedly not fans of Shah Rukh Khan. This kind of solidarity is almost unprecedented in the annals of the film industry. People also feel, the Khan was wronged when his son, Aryan Khan, was arrested in the cruise drugs bust case in October last year although no drug was found on his person.

The trailer of the film was liked by the potential audience. And those who did not like it, loved it!

The controversial Besharam rang song from the film, which seemed to have raised the hackles of those demanding a ban on the song and the film, has become a rage with the masses and classes alike.

An exciting trailer of a film and a hit song in it are a sure sign that the film will open big. In the case of Pathaan, not only have the two aforesaid conditions been fulfilled but additionally, the controversy has tilted the scales in favour of the film by prompting people to come out in large numbers in its supporters

RAKHI SAWANT FILES ANTICIPATORY BAIL

Rakhi Sawant has filed an anticipatory bail plea before the Bombay high court. The single judge bench of Justice M.S. Karnik on January 23 scheduled to hear the matter today (January 24). Her pre-arrest bail plea was recently rejected by the trial court in a case filed by model and actress Sherlyn Chopra, alleging that Rakhi had used her (Sherlyn) objectionable video in a public event.
Rakhi Sawant was booked for offences under sections of the Indian Penal Code.

NAWAZ’S WIFE BOOKED FOR TRESPASS

The wife of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was on January 23 booked for alleged trespass and voluntarily causing hurt on the complaint of his mother, according to a Bombay police officer. The FIR against the actor’s wife, Zainab, was registered on January 22 at the Versova (Bombay) police station.
The complainant, Mehrunisa Siddiqui, is Nawaz’s mother. She alleged that Zainab trespassed into her home and assaulted her after picking up an argument. A case under IPC sections for house trespass after preparation for hurt, voluntarily causing hurt and other offences has been registered against Zainab. No arrest was made. According to sources, the incident may be a fallout of a property dispute.

Superstar of the Millennium Amitabh Bachchan in many interviews said, ” Whatever success I got in the film industry is because of Salim-Javed, very honestly credit goes to them as well, these two are amongst very few persons who transformed an Actor Amitabh into a Superstar Amitabh Bachchan.” Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan were one iconic duo of their times. They have worked on multiple films together and gained name, fame and money. Infact they gave recognition to the film writers as in the past writers were not given credits on the posters, designs and many times on the screen. They were the first who treated and recognised as Stars. After giving dozens of superhits, they fell apart after some time. Javed has recently revealed the reason behind their separation.

In a recent interview, he unveiled, “Salim was one of the few who would encourage me. Had I been living somewhere else, we might have not met often, but because I got a room close to his home, I would often visit him.”

He further added, “In our struggling days, we were one tea. We did not have any other friends, we would work together from morning till evening. We would even have meals together. Out of 24 hours, we would spend 15-16 hours with each other. But as we became successful, new people came into our lives and our friend’s circle got separated. The mental rapport we had was broken. We could no longer work as a team.”
After their seperation Akhtar concentrated on lyrics writing and recieved name, fame and money while Saleem Khan continued as a story,screen play writer for sometime.

STAY ON ‘GANDHI GODSE EK YUDH’

Santoshi’s lawyer argued in the high court that his wife was the producer of Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh while Rajkumar Santoshi was merely the film’s director. But the advocate for Yash Shah told the court that Rajkumar Santoshi was a shareholder in Santoshi Productions LLP under which banner the film had been made.
After hearing both the sides, the court ruled that five days’ time be given to Santoshi to deposit the cash security of Rs. 50 lakh in the court. Santoshi is likely to appeal against the order.

SRK GETS ASSURANCE FROM ASSAM CM ON ‘PATHAAN’

Shah Rukh Khan made a call to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at 2 a.m. on January 22, expressing his concern over the protests in Guwahati against the release of his Pathaan. Bajrang Dal activists had on January 20 stormed into a cinema hall in Guwahati and had torn down and burnt the film’s posters.

So much so that the seats seem to be filling out within minutes. It seems that SRK fans are leaving no stone unturned to watch their actor on the big screen after a gap of four years.
According to the latest box office updates, Shah Rukh Khan led Pathaan has added a whopping sum of 18 crores via advance booking sales. That’s more than most films earned on their opening day last year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17 advised the leaders of the BJP to refrain from making unnecessary statements about films. He passed the diktat during the BJP national executive meeting held on January 16 and 17 in Delhi.

HC DIRECTS YRF TO MAKE ‘PATHAAN’ ACCESSIBLE FOR IMPAIRED

The Delhi high court on January 16 directed Yash Raj Films to prepare audio description, close captioning and subtitles in Hindi language for the OTT release of Pathaan to make it accessible for hearing and visually impaired persons. The direction was made in a case filed by a group of impaired persons to make Hindi films accessible to them.

Luv Films, T-Series Films and Vishal Bhardwaj Films’ Kuttey (A) is the story of a few individuals who are eyeing a bank van carrying crores of rupees, like hungry dogs would eye their food.
bank van is transporting tons of money from one point to another. Unknown to the others, three different groups want to usurp the crores of rupees from the van. Each individual or group wants the money for different reasons. Who finally gets the money, and what happens to the others is what the crux of the story is all about.
Gopal (Arjun Kapoor) and Paaji (Kumud Mishra) are police officers. They need money to get out of a terrible situation they’ve landed themselves in. Their senior officer, Pammi (Tabu), is thirsting for the money because she wants to improve her standard of living. Lovely (Radhika Madan), daughter of underworld don Narayan Khobre (Naseeruddin Shah), wants to lay her hands on the crores so that she can spend the rest of her life with Danny Dandekar (Shardul Bhardwaj) who, incidentally, works for her father. There is also Laxmi (Konkona Sen Sharma) who leads a group of Communist rebels who are on the run.
Aasmaan Bhardwaj has written an interesting story but one which moves on a single track. Although the story has layers in the sense that there are different groups at work, the objective of all the three groups is to lay their hands on the crores of rupees being transported from one point to another. Aasmaan Bhardwaj’s screenplay, with additional screenplay by Vishal Bhardwaj, is very interesting and it has been written in such a way that there is a lot of back and forth in the drama. This makes the drama interesting. But having said that, it must be added that the screenplay would appeal more to the class audience. Of course, the swear words, mouthed by the characters, hold appeal for the masses and front-benchers but the design of the drama is class-appealing. The climax could’ve been better and more exciting. Vishal Bhardwaj’s dialogues are raw and interesting. The use of four-letter words make the dialogues more entertaining.
Arjun Kapoor plays the role of corrupt police officer Gopal with complete conviction. He remains in character and does justice to his role. Tabu is very good as Pammi. The flourish with which she uses Hindi swear words is both, interesting and entertaining. Kumud Mishra is delightful in the role of Paaji. Radhika Madan does well as Lovely. Shardul Bhardwaj makes quite an impressive debut in the role of Danny Dandekar. Konkona Sen Sharma has her moments as Laxmi. Naseeruddin Shah does not get much scope to perform in the role of Narayan Khobre but he definitely lends weight to the character with his mere presence. Karan Nagar makes his presence felt as Sharad Khobre. Ashish Vidyarthi leaves a mark as Harry. Vijayant Kohli is natural to the core as Mamu. Jay Upadhyay is alright as Surti. Santosh Juvekar (as the police inspector), Anurag Kashyap (as the politician), Vijay Kumar Singh (as Shankar), Jagbir Singh Pannu (as the police inspector), Aasmaan Bhardwaj (as Rajiv Mishra), Brij Gopal (as Manohar), Ashwini Mishra (as the additional commissioner of police), Rewati Limaye (as Gopal’s wife) and Lavishka Gupta (as Gopal’s daughter) lend the necessary support.
Aasmaan Bhardwaj’s direction is good. The back-and-forth narration would appeal to the classes more than the masses. Although it is not an easy form of narration, Aasmaan has done justice to it. He has also extracted good work from out of his actors. The debut-making director definitely understands the craft very well. Vishal Bhardwaj’s music is appealing in the sense that the songs sound nice in the film but they are not too popular. Vishal Bhardwaj’s background music is pretty impactful. He has used the ‘Dan tan tan’ tune from his past film to great advantage. Lyrics (by Gulzar and Faiz Ahmed Faiz) are weighty. Farhad Ahmed Dehlvi’s cinematography is excellent. Action and stunt scenes (choreographed by Harpal Singh and Anton Moon) are very thrilling. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray’s production designing is of a fine standard. A. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is sharp.
On the whole, Kuttey is an entertaining film. It is class-appealing and will, therefore, get more critical acclaim than box-office rewards
because such films nowadays work better on OTT platforms. Family audience patronage will be less for the film. At the ticket windows, the well-written, well-made and well-enacted film will do limited business but collections will definitely pick up as the word of mouth among the class audience will be good.
Released on 13-1-’23 at Inox (daily 5 shows) and other cinemas of Bombay thru Yash Raj Film Distributors. Publicity: so-so. Opening: dull. …….Also released all over. Opening was not up to the mark at most of the places.

‘I AM KALAM’ WRITER SANJAY CHOUHAN DEAD | 13 January, 2023
Well-known film writer Sanjay Chouhan breathed his last on 12th January at a hospital in Bombay due to liver-related ailments. He had not been keeping well since three months. He was 62 and is survived by his wife and daughter. He will be cremated today at 12.30 p.m. at the Oshiwara Hindu Shamshan Bhoomi on S.V. Road, Jogeshwari West in Bombay.
Sanjay had written such films as Paan Singh Tomar (story and screenplay, which he co-wrote with Tigmanshu Dhulia), I Am Kalam (story and dialogues), Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (dialogues), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (screenplay and dialogues), Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster (story and screenplay), Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns (story and screenplay), Dhoop (dialogues) and Right Yaaa Wrong (dialogues). He started his career in 1998 with Manish Goswami for whom he wrote TV serials like Insaaf and Kittie Party.

Late Tunisha Sharma pinged her mother before committing suicide

Late television actor Tunisha Sharma had called up her mother before allegedly committing suicide and asked her to book tickets for Chandigarh, a court hearing the bail plea of actor Sheezan Khan, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of Sharma, was told on Wednesday.
Additional sessions court judge RD Deshpande adjourned the hearing till January 13, when Khan’s bail plea is likely to be decided.

Addressing Sumbul directly in his note, her father shared, ” It is the first time that we have been apart for so long, and I am not there when you (Sumbul) need me the most.”

He further said, ” I felt extremely emotional when family members reunited with the contestants. I also wanted to come and hug you Sumbul, you are my ‘sherni’. I have always been with you be it taking you to school, market, shoots or for trips.”

We were happily living family, but after a film did not work well, life took a drastic turn for my father. After losing all the savings in the film, my father drowned himself in alcohol, that led to health complications. And one day he finally breathed his last, We did not even have money for his funeral. We went to our relatives’ houses but it was Salman Khan’s father Mr. Salim Khan, finally gave us some money. Then not only we managed to complete the last rites respectfully but also bought ration for a few days.”

Actress Kranti Redkar has registered a police complaint after her maid allegedly stole her expensive watch and vanished. The Goregaon (Bombay) police have registered an FIR of theft by a servant, and are investigating. Redkar is married to IRS officer Sameer Wankhede.
Kranti said in her statement to the police that the full-time maid, Mantasha Khatoon, was behaving in a suspicious manner on December 24, 2022. She stepped out of her flat late at night on the pretext of meeting her husband. On December 26, the maid told Kranti that she wanted to go home as she had had a fight with her husband.
